They say if you want to destroy a country, destroy the system of education.
The kenyan system of education has been changed since independence as the relevance of it is changing overtime.
The 7-4-2-3 which was introduced in the year 1964 which was replaced by 8-4-4 in the year 1985.
With time, the 8-4-4 has turned irrelevant since it has produced more unskilled graduates not matching the number of jobs in the economy.
This is now being replaced by the CBC system of goverment with the 2-6-3-3-3 education cycle.

The PCIs as compared to the six which were coverd in 8.4.4, in CBC were reduced to four.
They include.
1. Global citizenship (peace, integrity and human rights)
2. Healthy (HIV/AIDS, Alcohol and drugs, lifestyle diseases)

Compared to 8.4.4, the CBC seem to be more advantageous to kenyans. Despite having some limitations but it guarantees responsible and competent citizens than 8.4.4.
Advantages of CBC compared to 8.4.4
1. It builds learners imagination and creativity as it is more of learner centered.
2. It expands learners opportunity as it nurtures learners ability hence able to create opportunities by themselves rather than depending on others.

Learners will be able to create opportunities from what is available locally |
3. It also ensures parental empowerment as parents also become part of the learning process.
4. Through the partinent and contemporary issues, one builds their critical thinking and problem solving skills as they learn on what is happening in the society and are ready to face.
5. It is also digital based which help them to catch up with the fast growing digital world.
6. It also assesses learners in all abilities hence nurturing what the learners are capable of and make the learners also forcused on what they can do best not what the economy offers.
Despite all these advantages, the CBC has some few limitations or challenges which has also become a setback in its implementation in Kenya.
Challenges facing the CBC implementation in Kenya.
1. Lack of parental support as most parents are illitrate hence feel a burden on the task.
2. Lack of adequate resources in implementing the Curriculum. E.g. in digital litracy, a school needs to have computers which might be impossible in some schools.
3. Lack of digital skills by most teachers making it difficult to implement it.

Lack of digital skills among the teachers will be a challenge in implementing this curriculum |
CBC has been the talk of the household with many people being against it but in reality CBC is the best system that will heal the kenyan economy on matters of unemployment. Civic education on this have to be done for all to understand it and embrace the change.
CBC is a Laborious curriculum.
ReplyDeleteYeah, laborious but it's end product is better than the simple 8:4:4. It creates responsible, creative and competent citizen hence the only solution for the stagnant Kenyan economic development
